Sheridan Safety
Task Force

Fireman

PURPOSE
This extremely important safety-oriented group meets regularly to address issues which directly impact the safety and security of the students, staff and visitors of all the District schools and facilities.

HISTORY
In the spring of 1998, following the occurrences of a number of tragic attacks by individuals in schools around the United States, it became a concern that any school might be the target of such an event.

School principals and others met with the Sheridan Chief of Police, who shared the same concern, to determine what steps could be taken to protect against similar attacks in the Sheridan School District.

From that beginning, has developed a task force made up representatives of the Sheridan School District, the Sheridan Police and Fire Departments and other involved and important community agencies who work to promote effective and necessary safety and security practices in and around the Sheridan schools.

Following the Coumbine High School tragedy in 1999, it became apparent that the earlier concerns had been warranted and that the need for this kind of task force was absolutely essential.

OPERATION
The SSSTF meets regularly during the school year, addressing a wide range of safety-related topics while taking on projects which encourage and enhance the security functions of the schools in the District. The development of an emergency management plan and an accompanying classroom emergency procedure handbook for assisting in dealing with school emergencies is just one result of the task force’s efforts.

GOAL
To promote, through integrated and organized planning, the safest possible environment for all students, staff and others who participate in the activities of the Sheridan Schools.
